Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Athens – A Witty Odyssey Through the Cradle of Civilization https://www.thoughtzeen.com/exploring-the-ancient-wonders-of-athens-a-witty-odyssey-through-the-cradle-of-civilization/ https://www.thoughtzeen.com/exploring-the-ancient-wonders-of-athens-a-witty-odyssey-through-the-cradle-of-civilization/#respond Tue, 07 Nov 2023 17:14:02 +0000 https://www.thoughtzeen.com/?p=340 Athens is a city dripping with more history than gyros sauce dripping down your fingers after a tasty souvlaki. Join me on this witty odyssey through ancient Athens that will be more epic than Homer’s tales! We’ll climb up to the majestic Acropolis, conjure up ancient debates in the Agora, channel tragic Greek poets at the open-air Theatre, and lose ourselves in charming historic neighborhoods like Plaka. Grab your sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes, it’s time to immerse ourselves in millennia of architecture, culture and mythology!

Climb Up to the Acropolis and See the Parthenon

people walking near brown concrete building during daytime

The Acropolis is the olive in Athens‘ martini—the sight that pulls your gaze like a Greek siren song. As you walk up the steep path, the Parthenon comes into view in all her majestic glory, posing gracefully despite her 2,500 years of age. The temple soars above Athens on this rocky hilltop citadel, a reminder of the city’s former golden age.

Ponder the Engineering Feat of Ancient Greek Architecture

As you get closer, ponder the engineering feat of this iconic Doric temple. The columns stand strong, having withstood earthquakes and thousands of years of history, stubbornly refusing to crumble under the weight of time. Unbelievable that this marvel of math and physics was constructed back in 438 BC without modern tools!

Just don’t be like those columns and lean on the ruins for your selfie – no need to topple over priceless artifacts in the name of social media. The gods won’t be too forgiving if you destroy their temples.

Marvel at the Erechtheion and Its Iconic Caryatids

Next up is the Erechtheion, just north of the Parthenon. Get your camera ready! This temple is a showstopper, beating any Instagram filter with its mesmerizing Porch of the Caryatids – 6 draped female figures that hold up the roof. Strike a pose between these iconic sculptures and pretend to be a living Caryatid yourself – no standing perfectly still required.

Here a Temple, There a Temple, Everywhere a Temple

Look around this temple hotspot and you’ll notice smaller ancient Greek temples like the Temple of Athena Nike, which depicts the goddess Athena like the WIKEd warrior she was. With so many temples to taste, you’ll have to budget your time wisely before those mouthwatering gyros start calling your name.

See Where Sparta Got Slammed – Ancient Agora

green trees near mountain under blue sky during daytime

Time to head down again to the Ancient Agora, which served as the social and political heart of ancient Athens. This used to be the IT spot centuries ago for philosophers and politicians to put Spartans in their place.

Grab some souvlaki skewers to snack on and wander around, picturing the epic rivalries that unfolded here. The Stoa of Attalos was the ancient version of a shopping mall – complete with idling around and chatting up your toga-wearing friends.

Become a Philosopher at the Stoa of Attalos

Feel free to have your own philosophical debates in the shadows of the Stoa while pondering entropy and the meaning of the “it’s all Greek to me” idiom. Then pop by the octagonal Tower of the Winds and surround yourself with sundials – handy reminders that time is fleeting so carpe that diem!

Channel Your Inner Dionysus at the Theater

a large stone building

Hope you’re ready to release your inner theatre kid, because next we’re heading to the Theatre of Dionysus! As you walk into the giant stone amphitheater, fancy yourself a tragedian.

Picture this being packed to the brim as you reenact your favorite Greek tragedy on the open-air stage. Channel Sophocles and give Euripides a run for his money when you belt out your monologue! Envision the roar of the crowds, who will definitely be throwing more than just roses at your Oscar-worthy performance.

Get Lost in the Ancient Neighborhoods

Had enough of historical ruins for awhile? Give your mind a break and just wander the winding side streets of Plaka and Anafiotika. Lose yourself in their pastel-colored houses and shops, miles away from Athens‘ hectic modern hustle and bustle.

In these charming historic neighborhoods, you can almost imagine toga-clad figures lounging around – before being beckoned by the happy hour special at a rooftop bar! Yes, frozen drinks with a view await even time travelers like you. Santorini vibes for a fraction of the price!

Muse Over the Marvels at the National Museum

If you prefer even more air-conditioning after heating up among ancient ruins, pop into the National Archaeological Museum. Here, you can gape slack-jawed at astonishing artifacts like the Antikythera Mechanism, often called the “world’s first computer”. Gaze into the mesmerizing eyes of the Mask of Agamemnon. Sometimes it’s nice to marvel at ancient wonders without breaking a sweat!

Make a Pilgrimage to the Temple of Olympian Zeus

beige concrete structures

Right, time to get your steps in again! Next up is a pilgrimage to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Be like Alexander the Great and channel the spirit of mighty Zeus amid these towering Corinthian columns.

Just don’t skip to the empire-conquering end of Alexander’s story, or you’ll be the one leaving this site in ruins! Stick to happy beginnings and victories only as you pose for pics.

Pay Tribute to Hadrian at His Arch

Head over to the late Roman-era Temple of Olympian Zeus, where you’ll find the triumphal Arch of Hadrian right nearby. Even if he didn’t win Greece’s Next Top Emperor, Hadrian still gifted Athens this arch as thanks for naming the city after him.

Snap a cheesy pic with one leg popped for the ‘gram at this 2nd century AD beauty! Hashtag no filter needed for this #marblegoals archway.

Get Spiritual at the Hill Sites

For breathtaking views and a side of ancient mythology, head up to the lofty Areopagus Hill. Here, legend says the god Ares was tried for murder. Channel the oracle energy and supernatural vibes as you climb to the top.

Or for more sweeping city panoramas, head to Philopappos Hill, the highest of Athens‘ small peaks. Take in the sprawling metropolis below and reflect on how gorgeous it remains centuries later. Views even ancient gods and goddesses like Athena would envy!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re meandering ancient alleyways under the Mediterranean sun, marveling at weathered temples, or living it up Greek style at a modern taverna, Athens‘ spirit perseveres magnificently. Return home with your sandals worn from walking millennia-old paths, but your mind eternally enriched by the cradle of Western civilization.

Just try not to break any priceless artifacts along the way and you’ll be welcome back to this ageless wonder anytime! Yamas! (That’s Greek for “cheers!”)

Off the Beaten Track in Myanmar: Exploring Temples, Rivers, and Villages https://www.thoughtzeen.com/off-the-beaten-track-in-myanmar-exploring-temples-rivers-and-villages/ https://www.thoughtzeen.com/off-the-beaten-track-in-myanmar-exploring-temples-rivers-and-villages/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2023 16:12:01 +0000 https://www.thoughtzeen.com/?p=338 Right-o! Looks like we’re headed on a proper adventure – traipsing about in Myanmar, venturing to undiscovered temples, cruising down rivers and mingling in rural villages. None of that touristy lark, thank you very much. We’ll be like right off-road, going on a magical mystery tour to all the best hidden gems and local haunts. Should be a cracking romp. Bit terrified, lots excited! Let’s go, go, go!

Temple Hopping, Monastery Style

Myanmar temples

Temples ahoy! Myanmar’s absolutely chockablock with ancient stupas, shrines and all that. Properly crumbling Buddhist monasteries straight out of an Indiana Jones flick. Hope there’s no creepy crawly creatures, but do watch your step, clumsy arse! We’ll have an amble around these ancient sites – ooh some monks praying, how charming – and hike between little forest outposts where time stands still. Bit like the land that forgot, but very calm and peaceful. Lovely little pilgrimage. Namaste and all that!

The Temples of Bagan

Temples of Bagan

Crikey O’Reilly! Bagan is temple central – pagodas all over the bloody shop. Like Buddha vomited stupas, poor chap. Amazing photo opps though, very gram-worthy. Watch for ankle-twisting potholes and weird stone faces ready to attack! Let’s explore flashy Shwezigon Pagoda first – cracking views up there. Deep breath…here we go, steady on. Ooh look, little monkeys! Click-click selfie time. Got the perfect temple shot for Insta! Hashtag blessed, amirite?

Monasteries of Mandalay

aerial view of houses during daytime

Well this is a turn up for the books! Mandalay’s lousy with incredible hillside monasteries – who knew? Bit dodgy climb but magic once you’re up top. Do say hi to the wise old monks and give the young novice whippersnappers a wave too. Bless their souls, sweet ickle mites. No grabbing the relics now – priceless Burmese treasures, those are! Maybe they’ll offer us tea and a nibble if we’re extra polite? Fingers crossed! Right, that’s enough ruminating…onwards!

Stupas Along the Shan Hills

Crikey, we’re Shan Hills bound! Buckle up, buttercups, bumpy ride ahead. Winding round rickety roads till suddenly – bam – clifftop stupas everywhere, cool beans! Wee bit weather-worn but still striking, no? Quick pitstop to admire the views then back in the jeep, pip pip. Careful of those loose rocks, clumsy clots – one wrong step and splat! No ta. Keep eyes peeled for rabid wildlife too, ghastly stuff. Almost there… Phew, safe landing! Time for a G&T, I should say. Cheerio!

Cruising Down the Irrawaddy

The legendary Irrawaddy River, here we come! Sit back and soak up all the scenic vistas floating by – lush green everywhere. Pop into time-warp riverside villages too, should be terribly quaint darling. Locals doing their chores, washing clothes and all that business. Do say hello if they stare! We’ll moor wherever interest is piqued and have a jolly explore. Sunset on the river is meant to be smashing so make sure we’re back aboard. Tally-ho, skipper, let’s shove off!

The Magical Morning Mist

Wakey-wakey, rise and shine! What a treat this misty morn is, so atmospheric. Our little boat putt-putting through the valley, sun peeking over the hills. Locals already hard at work fishing and such – good for them! Breathe in the dewy air, fresh as a daisy. Today’s going to be brill, I can feel it in my waters. Onwards, trusty riverboat!

Life Along the Riverbanks

Well, well, look at this little scene! Washing, chatting, cooking – glimpse of normal life, how novel. Children running amok, baby goats frolicking…idyllic, really. Shall we mosey over and say hi? Stiff upper lip if they stare at our pasty foreign faces! I’m sure they’re just being neighborly. Maybe we’ll get invited for tea? Ooh, is that fried fish I smell? Delish. Right, back to the boat all. Chop chop!

Sunset on the Irrawaddy

Shh! Sunset time. Get ready for a real visual treat, dolls. Just look at that fiery painted sky – pinks, purples, orangey hues – ever so pretty. And the mirror-like river reflecting it all back. Slap-bang breathtaking, enough to make one emosh. The sounds too – birds tittering, water lapping – how soothing. Let’s just pause and really soak this in, darling. A moment of mindfulness. Bliss.

Hiking from Hill Tribe to Hill Tribe

Enough lazing about! Time to pull on our big girl pants and hit the hills, gang. We’ll trek from village to village meeting all sorts of colorful local tribes. Shan today, Chin tomorrow, Naga by sundown… how thrilling! Each with their own quaint customs and funky garb. Do take lots of pics for the ‘gram. Our accommodation shall be ultra basic but that’s all part of the adventure, innit? Onwards and upwards, troops! Mind the cowpats.

Trekking the Shan Highlands

Gird your loins, gang, the Shan Highlands await! Lush rolling hills as far as the eye can see. Some patchy trails ahead – one wrong step into the poo piles and you’ll be right brown bread! Steady on. We’ll pass oodles of scenic villages before day’s end – almost there team. I can already smell tonight’s scrummy Shan dinner, can’t you? Yum-o! Feeling a bit cream crackered but keep spirits high, nearly at our destination! A Shan longhouse should be just over this – crikey! – hill.

Visiting the Chin Villages

Chin-wagging in Chin country, here we come! A rum old trek through mountains and mist but so worth it. The rural Chin villages are simply charming – wee thatched huts and roaming livestock, icons. But those vivid tribal tattoos though… talk about making a statement! Watch your mouths when you stare, rude gits. The ladies will happily pour millet beer and rustle up dinner once we get chatting I’m sure. Then tuck yourselves into blankets handmade with love and drift off to sleep with the crickets. Nighty-night, gang!

Through the Land of the Naga

Get ready for the rare treat of entering mysterious Naga territory – not many outsiders get access so consider yourselves privileged! Long journey and uncertain welcome but persevere we must! Apparently the Nagas are rather private souls but full of ancient customs and artifacts. Fingers crossed they’ll take a shine to our friendly faces and rustle up a feast. Watch for those elaborate tribal tattoos and ladies with piercings agogo. Right motley crew they are. If we’re lucky, tonight we’ll sleep as honored guests in a far-flung Naga longhouse. How terribly exotic!

Immerse Yourself in Pristine Village Life

Wakey-wakey gang, a real cultural experience awaits in rural Myanmar today! We’re off the beaten track to where life’s unchanged for centuries – no electricity, WiFi, or any of those modern fripperies. Just good old-fashioned community spirit. We’ll help the smiling Pa-O people with farming and cookery and all that malarkey. Learn from the wrinkly village mamas before they disappear forever! Great photo opps too – ooh spin me right round in those colorful getups. Then gather round the campfire for fireside chats and tuneless singalongs. Properly heartwarming time capsule this is. Consider my soul nourished!

The Pa-O People

Strewth, look, it’s the Pa-O tribe! Well aren’t you lot a sight for sore eyes in your psychedelic garb! The gals will paint our faces with traditional thanaka powder – cool beans! – then we’ll have a nice cuppa and chinwag. Later, the chief’s daughter can teach us to weave while Granny knits away, sweet. Tonight, music and dancing under the moonlight – good times! We’ll bed down in their rustic bamboo huts, bellies full of fried veggies. Nighty-night, mind the spiders! What an ace cross-cultural exchange this was.

Villages of Inle Lake

Inle Lake next, how thrilling! More traditional village vibes on stilts in the water. Not very health and safety conscious but oodles of rustic charm! We’ll peruse the floating markets, watch the fisherfolk at work – that leg rowing technique, crikey! – and help make paper and things from scratch. Consider us fully immersed! Tonight, a stilt homestay with a local family – bucket flush loos and bedtime lullabies. Don’t mind if I do!

Chin Village Homestays

Right-o, tonight it’s an authentic Chin village sleepover – oh heck yes! Up in the emerald hills, this place is like stepping back in time. We’ll stay with a delightful local family, help Grandma with chores, watch the ickle kiddies play. Then drink rice beer by the fire, chinwagging late into the night underneath handwoven blankets. A rooster will cockadoodledoo us awake at dawn ready for another ace day! Could get used to this rustic vibe. Consider me immersed!

Delve into Myanmar’s Rich History

Okay gang, switch your brains to discovery mode! This corner of Myanmar’s chockablock with ruins and relics shrouded in mystery just waiting to be unearthed. We’re talking forgotten temples, crumbling pagodas, curiosities to rival the best archaeology digs! With trusty local experts, we’ll leave no vine uncovered in our quest to unravel the secrets of the ancients. Ready your machetes and thinking caps – tomorrow promises a cracking historical adventure!

The Forgotten Temples of Mrauk U

Stone the crows, would you look at Mrauk U! Positively teeming with abandoned temples – this place is an explorer’s paradise! Let’s start with the half-drowned Andaw Pagoda, shall we? Super eerie and atmospheric! Heads up for critters, slippery stones, and one or two sketchy passageways – nobody’s health and safety conscious ’round here! Still, incredible find this is eh? Onwards, to the next forgotten beauty waiting patiently to be discovered! Tally-ho!

Uncovering Ancient Cities Consumed by Nature

I say, what have we here? Some sort of ancient ruin completely swallowed by the jungle! Let’s go hacking through with our machetes, gang. Imagine what treasures we might uncover… Ready? Heave-ho! Crikey, would you look at that! A whole palace complex emerges through the undergrowth – ghostly but still standing. Right thrilling stuff. We’ll explore respectfully then attempt to find more overgrown wonders. Maybe a tunnel to squeeze through or some precarious stairs to ascend? Safety third! Just don’t nick any artefacts, you rotters. Now where to next? Tomb raiding is tiring work, eh gang?

Myths and Legends of the Chin People

Shush now! Tonight, we’ll gather round the campfire for some cracking Chin folklore and fables. Our guides are primed with ripping yarns about spirits, eternal lakes of lost love, feuding dragons and the like. Proper far-fetched but reveals oodles about their culture. Oh, and those famous facial tattoos I hear are tied to ancestral spirits or some such lark. Chin mythology is off-the-charts bananas! We’ll listen, wide-eyed, imaginations running wild under the blanket of night. Then drift off dreaming of outlandish legends and fables. Nighty-night all!

Outdoor Adventures Beckon

On your feet, you lazy sods! Time to get our adrenaline pumping with some high-octane outdoor pursuits! Myanmar’s scenery is simply splendiferous darling, so get ready to hike misty hills, shoot white-water rapids and camp under the stars. We’ll follow our ethnic guides off-road to spectacular places only reachable on foot. Whether it’s peaceful or pulse-racing, Myanmar’s pristine wilderness promises to revive our knackered souls. Chin chin!

Kayaking Through Flooded Forests

Kayaks at the ready! Today we’re paddling through an actual honest-to-goodness flooded jungle. Keep eyes peeled for cheeky monkeys up to no good in the treetops! The air’s so earthy here, really grounds you doesn’t it? Just watch for snappy crocs, frightful creatures. We’ll drift along calmly until it’s time to pitch our tents on the riverbank. Idyllic spot for a chinwag and nibbles as the sun sets. Nighty-night team, sleep tight!

Camping on the Chindwin River Banks

Gather round the campfire gang, it’s our last night in Burma! Bellies full of Shan noodles, let’s reminisce about our rip-roaring adventures – rambling temples, cruising down the Irrawaddy, meeting the smiling Chin folk… what an absolute romp! My camera roll’s chockablock with incredible memories. And my soul feels refreshed and recharged after immersing in such rich culture and spellbinding scenery. Just look at that inky night sky dotted with shimmering stars – magic! I don’t think I’ll ever forget my inaugural Myanmar jaunt, nor the warm-hearted people. What an absolute treat it’s been! Nighty-night, team.

Delicious Local Delicacies

Wakey-wakey, chaps! Today we feast on Burma’s scrummy scran. We’re talking exotic Chin curries, family recipes in Shan State, slurping endless bowls of fishy mohinga soup. Yum-o! The depths of Myanmar’s cuisine have yet to be fully explored by tastebud tourists, so we’ll be dining on legit street food and farmers’ market fodder. Hope you’re all hungry! Let’s hop to it, gang.

Learning to Cook Mohinga

Right, ’bout time we learned to whip up Myanmar’s national dish – mohinga, of course! This fish and noodle broth is the locals’ brekkie of choice but fiendishly tricky to perfect. We’ll head to the crack of dawn market to gather ingreds – banana stems, lemongrass, garlic chives – then it’s back to the kitchen for Chef’s masterclass. Stoke up that fire, boil the stock, add your aromatics… looking good team! Squeeze of lime, sprinkle of crunchy bits and voila – mohinga ready for scoffing. Tuck in gang, we’ve earned these steaming bowls of goodness!

Chin Tribal Feasts

I say, look lively – tonight we’re dining with the Chin people! They’re laying on a proper tribal feast in our honor – lucky sods are we! I hear Chin food is fab: dry fish curries, roasted meats, edible ferns… all sorts of indigenous nibbles to sample. Don’t be shy in asking for second helpings either – Burmese hospitality means continuously cramming food down guests’ gullets. We’ll eat Until our trousers feel snug, then sing songs and exchange tales around the fire. Burp, what a scrummy feed! The Chin can feast us anytime.

Farm-to-Table in Shan State

Another day, another delicious feed! Shan State’s on today’s menu and we’re off to an organic farm for ultra-fresh produce. Those green-fingered farmers will teach us how to cook the tastiest stir-fries using veggies just plucked from the soil. We’ll chop, stir, and sizzle up a storm then enjoy the fruits of our labor al fresco. This crunchy stir-fry paired with Shan wheat noodles and herby broth tastes unbelievably vibrant. Farm-to-table dining at its absolute freshest! Bottoms up, gang.

Colorful Markets and Festivals

Right-o team, time to dive into Burma’s blazingly bright markets and festivals! We’ll wander rustic village markets overflowing with exotic sundries and sample fried street food ’til we burst. But don’t miss the colorful tribal celebrations either… music, dancing, rituals, verifier what a hoot! Camera batteries charged? Then let’s hit the happy chaos, gang. No better insight into local life than these jamborees. Tally-ho!

Indawgyi Lake Wednesday Market

Well ain’t this a picture! It’s market day by Indawgyi Lake and the place is buzzing with villagers touting their wares: fresh fish, fragrant spice sacks, handwoven goods…ooh and snacks galore! Locals flock here every Wednesday in their vibrant garb – smart lens choice bringing that SLR, gang. We’ll nibble our way through endless street stalls sampling local flavors then stock up on some textiles as pressies. Chatty vendors will eagerly barter if you play your cards right. What a morning! Worth schlepping to this out-of-the-way market.

The Famed Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival

Seriously cool festival alert, chaps! It’s sky lantern time at Taunggyi‘s annual Fire Balloon Festival. As the sun sets, a rainbow array of paper balloons gets lit up and released into the heavens. Thousands of glowing orbs float gracefully over the awestruck crowds. We’ll ooh and aah at the mesmerizing sight. Don’t forget to make a wish before your balloon disappears into the night! Flaming debris is a slight hazard but do mind the superstitions around this traditional festival. What goes up must come down…eventually!

Celebrating Thadingyut Light Festival

Thadingyut time, gang! Myanmar honors Buddha’s descent from heaven this month with a funky Lantern Festival. Streets glow with glittering lights and locals do jigs outside swanky pagodas. We’ll join devout Buddhists in paying respects as they light candles and incense sticks. Should be awfully pretty! There’s also lots of music, dancing, and general merriment to partake in. And sample sweet flattened rice at the roadside stalls – delish party grub! Right motley crew out tonight but all good fun. Get stuck in team!

Encounters with Myanmar’s Ethnic Diversity

Myanmar’s a patchwork of tribes and we’ve barely scratched the surface! Before we vamoose, a few final cross-cultural exchanges await. We’ll meet the Naga, learn lacquerware from the Pa-O and experience authentic Chin customs. Ourseen diverse, this trip, but still countless ethnic nuances to discover! Each encounter here teaches us something new. Let’s embrace our final days getting to know Myanmar’s peoples.

Experiencing Chin Tribal Life

I simply adore the Chin – one last visit before we depart! Their villages still follow old-school traditions: foraging food, ancestral worship, playing chinlone sport. We’ll chat with a shaman, watch the gals cook dinner over fires, and get steaming rice beer poured by youths with full-face tattoos. Proper immersion in real Chin life! No clue what they’re saying but smiles transcend language, eh? Let’s barter for some handicrafts then rest our heads in a smoky longhouse. Nighty-night!

Visiting Remote Naga Villages

Cracking adventure ahead today, chaps! We’re venturing way off-grid to the distant Naga Hills. Relatively untouched by modern life, the Naga folk are a shy but fascinating bunch. Let’s see those ornate headdresses and piercings adorning the tribal women! Language barriers abound but we’ll power through and hopefully score dinner invitations. I’d love to hear some ancient Naga songs around the fire tonight. What an honor to be hosted in these isolated villages before heading home. Dream big tonight, gang!

Learning the Art of Lacquerware from the Pa-O People

Final day here, sob! One last culture hit – we’re getting crafty with the Pa-O tribe and learning traditional lacquerware skills. This painstaking technique predates recorded time! We’ll collect birch bark, then watch the masters transform sap into glistening bowls and trinkets. Such patience and precision – mad respect. Once our amateur creations are somewhat presentable, we’ll gift them in exchange for also receiving special handmade keepsakes. Smashing cross-cultural mementos! Well team, time to bid farewell to remarkable Myanmar. What an adventure!

Final Thoughts

And…scene! Cracking marathon trip that was, eh gang? We certainly packed a lot into our Burma bonanza – hidden temples, rural villages, cruising down the Irrawaddy, feasting on exotic curries. And so many smiling locals ready to proudly share their world with curious wide-eyed tourists. I’ve returned home sun-kissed, culturally enlightened and desperate to visit again someday! Do join me next time for more off-track adventures in this mesmerizing corner of Asia. Cheerio for now, Myanmar – I miss you already darling!

A Solo Traveler’s Adventures in Thailand https://www.thoughtzeen.com/have-your-mind-blown-in-bangkok-a-solo-travelers-adventures-in-thailand/ https://www.thoughtzeen.com/have-your-mind-blown-in-bangkok-a-solo-travelers-adventures-in-thailand/#respond Sun, 05 Nov 2023 20:09:52 +0000 https://www.thoughtzeen.com/?p=331 Looks like this ol’ gal is headed on a banana peel of an adventure to Bangkok. Just me, my good-for-nothin’ backpack, and a heckuva hankering to have my mind blown in the capital of Thailand. Golly gee – I can hardly wait to slurp up all the pad thai my stomach can handle! But before I spill the soy sauce, let me start from the beginning of my whirlwind solo escapade…

I ain’t gonna lie to ya – I was deader than a doornail about this trip at first. What in tarnation does a farmgirl from Texas know about backpacking through temples ‘n markets in Asia? But dangnabbit, I decided to quit my pussyfootin’ and go for the gusto. Best choice I ever did make.

Soon as I landed in Bangkok, I knew this place was lit up like a Christmas tree. Skyscrapers and traffic for days – it was busier than a one-legged man in a butt kickin’ contest! But nestled among the concrete jungle were delicate temples and shrines just begging to be explored. Well, I’m always up for an adventure, so I saddled up my backpack and prepared to have my mind blown!

Temples Galore in Bangkok

I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if Bangkok don’t have more temples than ants at a picnic. These sacred spots glittered like diamonds with their intricate carvings and lavish designs. My favorite was the Grand Palace – that place was finer than frog hair!

Grand Palace – Fit for royalty

The Grand Palace was big enough to fit two ticks on a dog’s back. I ain’t never seen nothing like it! The place was fancier than a fox in socks. Bright spires, golden trim and more Buddha statues than you could shake a stick at. And that Emerald Buddha? Why, it glittered like the first dew drops on a spring morning. Took my breath away quicker than a hog can eat a cob of corn!

The palace had more twists and turns than a pig’s tail, but I didn’t mind getting lost in its majesty. By the time I left, I felt more relaxed than a cow chewing cud in a clover patch.

Wat Pho – Home of reclining Buddha

Right down the dirt road from the Grand Palace lies Wat Pho, another Bangkok treasure. There I found the most fantastic reclining Buddha you ever did see! This golden giant was so dang long, you could rest five bulls tip to tail on it and still have room leftover.

After gawking at that whopper, I got my fortune told by one of the temple’s famous soothsayers. She said I’d go on a trip soon that would “open my eyes wider than a harvest moon.” Well, I couldn’t make heads or tails of it at the time, but looking back – I reckon she was right as rain!

Go Wild on Khao San Road

If the temples were Bangkok’s calm, Khao San Road was its storm! This place was busier than a cat trying to bury you-know-what on a marble floor. Backpackers from all walks of life converged on this kooky street to eat, drink and be merry. I made more friends than fleas on an old hound dog!

Find your tribe – other young explorers

I met folks from all over the globe at Khao San. There was Giuseppe from Italy, Adeola from Nigeria, and Tina from Tasmania. We swapped stories over Singhas and bonded quicker than cow patties hitting the ground on a rainy day. Before long, they became the best travel compadres a gal could ask for.

We stayed up later than roosters on a moonshine bender, laughing, dancing and chit-chatting like a bunch of hens at a hoedown. Our time together reminded me that people everywhere are more alike than different!

Shop ’til you drop – trinkets and souvenirs

That Khao San had more trinkets than burs on a hound dog’s back! The vendors could sell ice to an Eskimo, let me tell you. I tested my bargaining skills and loaded up on souvenirs, from neon tank tops to bamboo flutes. Sure do love bringing home unique tidbits to remind me of my adventures!

Foodie’s Paradise – Authentic  Cuisine

If there’s one thing that blew my skirt up more than a tornado in Kansas, it was the food! Thai grub tantalized my taste buds in ways I never thought possible. My favorite was authentic pad thai – them noodles were tangier than a bull nettle and twice as tasty. And let me tell you, I ate more mangos than a pig eats slop! Went through fruit faster than a knife through butter. Simply divine.

Noodle heaven – from pad thai to tom yum

From stinky durian to savory curries, the Thai dishes made me happier than a woodchuck in a sawdust pile. But nothing quite beats slurping down a steaming bowl of noodles. Pad thai, tom yum soup, kuaytiaw – don’t matter which! The noodles here slipped down my gullet smoother than okra jelly.

One night I got adventurous and tried stewed goat intestines. Lordy, that was funkier than a skunk at a square dance! Reminded me why I’m happier than a dead pig in the sunshine stickin’ to noodles and stir fry.

Fresh tropical fruit – Nature’s candy

If noodles were the main course, fruit was dessert! Pineapples sweeter than grandma’s pie, mangoes that melted in my mouth, dragonfruit that popped with flavor – oh man, I was happier than a tornado in a trailer park. A refreshing treat after a mouth-scorching meal.

The locals kept eying me as pineapple juice dribbled down my chin. Guess they ain’t used to seein’ a farmgirl get so geeked up over fruit! But dang, they grow some good grub here.

Get Your Party On – Bangkok Nightlife

people standing near building

When the sun set each night, Bangkok lit up with more energy than a prison break. Neon lights flashed, music blared, and revelers from far and wide lived it up like there was no tomorrow. I put on my best redneck rave attire and joined the hullabaloo.

Rooftop revelry – city views with your brew

I kicked off many an evening on a swanky rooftop bar, sipping Chang beers as I watched the sun sink below Bangkok’s jagged skyline. From up top, the traffic below looked busier than worms in a watermelon. But the views and drinks, now those were smoother than a bobcat sneaking up on a rabbit.

As the night went on, the drinks flowed faster than Niagara Falls after a rainstorm. The whole place turned into a party quicker than popcorn pops!

Party ’til dawn – dance off the jet lag

Around midnight, I moseyed down to the bumpin’ nightclubs. They were packed tighter than cattle on market day! As live bands wailed and DJs spun banging beats, I danced off my jet lag and then some.

By the time the sun peeked up, I was more tuckered out than a tick on a fat hound. But seeing locals, tourists, and ladyboys letting loose together sure did warm my heart. People across the globe just wanna have the same dang fun!

Well, there you have it y’all – my wham-bam excursion through Bangkok and beyond. This place packs more excitement than a Category 5 tornado! I aimed to have my mind blown, and Bangkok delivered better than UPS. From sacred shrines to spicy stir-fry to befriendin’ folks from all walks of life – this trip expanded my horizons more than a sunrise in west Texas.

So if you got an itch to explore – don’t just sit there like a bump on a log. Grab life by the horns and make memories that’ll last longer than Grandma’s fruitcake. Trek halfway ’round the world if you have to. Trust me, it’ll be more fun than a barrel of monkeys! Just watch out for traffick – those tuk-tuks drive nuttier than a coyote on cactus juice.

Well, all this jibber-jabber has got me busier than a one-legged cat trying to bury turds on a frozen pond. Time for this cowgirl to mosey on down the trail in search of my next adventure! Yeehaw!

My Not-So-Peaceful Escape to the Slovenian Alpine Fairy Tale of Lake Bled https://www.thoughtzeen.com/my-not-so-peaceful-escape-to-the-slovenian-alpine-fairy-tale-of-lake-bled/ https://www.thoughtzeen.com/my-not-so-peaceful-escape-to-the-slovenian-alpine-fairy-tale-of-lake-bled/#respond Sun, 05 Nov 2023 20:09:09 +0000 https://www.thoughtzeen.com/?p=330 Let me tell you about the time I visited scenic Lake Bled in the picturesque Slovenian Alps. Now when I hear “scenic Alpine lake,” I picture a peaceful, spiritual experience – just me, the crystalline waters, the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the breeze. Maybe a monk chanting “ommm” on the shore.

Yeah, Lake Bled was not like that at all. Or rather, it could’ve been peaceful if high-strung folks like me would just shut up and soak in the ambience. But nope, we insist on cramming this tiny lake with enough activities to tire out a honeymooning octogenarian couple after a Red Bull bender.

At first glance, it all looks tranquilly beautiful. There’s the limpid blue-green water, the church-topped Bled Island bobbing like a frosted cupcake, quaint villages with adorable thatched roofs dotting the countryside. My slack-jawed admiration lasted until I noticed the paragliders zipping by at eye level. Nothing ruins a peaceful moment like people shouting “Look at me dangling from a polka-dotted bedsheet!”

Somehow I stumbled into a misguided kayaking trip where the goal seemed to be disrupting the peaceful flocks of swans. Before I knew it, I was crammed in a raft, getting churned through whitewater rapids like butter in a KitchenAid.

And for what? So I could feel that fleeting adrenaline rush that convinces people to jump out of planes?

Eventually I wised up and slowed my roll, so to speak. Turns out Lake Bled has plenty of opportunities to sit and watch the world go by, no adrenaline required. From the stone footbridge over rushing Vintgar Gorge to a lakeside bench with an ice cream cone in hand, moments to marvel at Mother Nature abound. The surrounding Julian Alps deliver dizzying vistas galore with just a gondola ride up Mount Straža’s panoramic trails.

Sure, adventure lurks around every corner if that’s your thing. You can get your heart rate up hiking, biking, and parasailing your way through the snow-capped peaks and green forests. But Lake Bled also offers the chance to exhale – a rare oasis of glassy waters and postcard vistas to soak in.

Learn from my adrenaline-chasing ways. Take time to fully imprint Lake Bled’s majestic scenery on your senses, the memory lingering long after your mountain bike tracks fade. Sip wine at a terrace café and watch swans ripple the tranquil waters in the fading dusk light.

Revel in the utter peace of Lake Bled, before some knucklehead shouts “Woo hoo!” and shatters it all over again.

Scenery Straight From a Slovenian Fairy Tale

From the moment I arrived, Lake Bled struck me as an illustration from a children’s fairy tale book plucked from the shelf and plopped into the real world. The crystalline blue-green waters, the church rising from the tiny forested Bled Island, the Medieval stone castle clinging to the cliffside – it was all so impossibly picturesque.

Part of me wondered if I’d been drugged and hallucinated my way into an alpine Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I kept glancing around for hummingbirds twittering “you’re in the wrong story!” But nope, just your average Slovenian postcard come to life.

The places around the lake even sounded fairytale-esque. Perched overlooking the water is aptly named (say it with me) Bled Castle. And when I told people I stayed at the Grand Hotel Toplice, the fanciful name rolled off my tongue like a delicious caramel.

A Lake Tailor-Made for Restless Sightseers Like Me

green trees near body of water during daytime

While the scenery suggests a place to find zen, Lake Bled apparently caters to antsy people like me who can’t sit still. Simply admiring the view isn’t enough – I needed to climb it, zip line off it, dive into it.

In my quest to see Lake Bled from every adrenaline-spiking angle, I hiked up ridges with the snow-capped Julian Alps at my heels for Instagrammable panoramas. I squeezed into a wetsuit and bobbed in the chilly waters like an awkward human cork. And let me tell you – parasailing hundreds of feet above the lake clutched to a virtual stranger while screeching like a barn owl is an experience I’ll never forget, no matter how hard I try.

Everywhere I turned, a new heart-pumping activity beckoned. “Want to raft down steep canyons and careen over frothing waterfalls?” asked the brochure. Well sure, if you say so!

I mountain biked down single-track trails through dense forest so fast that all the scenery became an impressionist’s green blur. And screaming over rapids while whitewater rafting in a rainstorm was…unforgettable.

At times my enthusiasm outpaced my skill, like during a harrowing midnight hike down slippery slopes from Lake Bohinj without a flashlight. Ah, such memories.

If You Insist On Relaxing, Lake Bled Allows That Too

Aerial View of an Island

Now if you’re asking – reasonably – what’s wrong with sitting back to admire Mother Nature’s work, Lake Bled has you covered there too.

When I wasn’t flipping kayaks and clinging to cliffs, I did manage to soak in the ambience in relative peace. Walking the lake path at sunrise, the glassy purple reflecting the pastel clouds was admittedly mesmerizing. Even someone as restless as me could pause to gaze at that.

From Vintgar Gorge’s 143 stairs zigzagging over emerald waters, to Bled Island’s bell tower mirroring itself in the lake from a wooden rowboat, restorative moments beckon. Quiet trails wend up forested slopes to hearty Slovenian cottages and babbling brooks. Grab a strudel from a lakeside café, find a bench, and watch swans ripple the tranquil turquoise waters to your heart’s content.

Just don’t expect the adrenaline-junkies to leave you alone for long. It’s only a matter of time before a hand glider floats by or a distant whoop from the ziplines shatters the silence once again. Ah, sweet tranquility, we hardly knew ye.

An Alpine Lake Open For Business

Aerial Shot of a House Overlooking Lake Bled

While lesser-known than Lake Como or Hallstatt, Lake Bled has definitively arrived on the European scenic hotspot map. Its cobalt waters even have their own eponymous dessert – the decadent Bled cream cake.

Nestled in a storybook setting or not, Lake Bled is still a tourist attraction humming with commerce. The lakefront bustles with an almost Swiss-like efficiency. Pletna oarsmen whisk visitors to Bled Island on the hour, while rowboat and SUP rentals turn a tidy profit.

The town has wisely maintained the charming Alpine-village vibe, with geranium-lined balconies and chalet guesthouses aplenty. But look closely at the high-end wellness centers and prestigious properties like the Grand Hotel Toplice and you’ll notice they mean business. At Lake Bled, fairy tale beauty and commerce congenially coexist.

Will the Spell of Lake Bled Enchant You Too?

brown wooden boat floating on body of water

Even with my restless spirit, the allure of Lake Bled cast its spell over me too. Its crystalline waters reflect the surrounding peaks like a pristine mirror. Bled Island rises from the blue as if painted into a romantic panorama. And quaint villages nestled around the lakeside complete the fairy tale vibe.

Sure, Lake Bled has its touristy side and attracts the adventure-hungry. But with the sublime scenery of the Julian Alps, indulgences of Bled cream cake, and moments of utter tranquility and reflection, its magic is undeniable.

So if a bounty of natural beauty and Instagram backdrops for the whole family sound appealing, consider this scenic Slovenian gem. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the guy parasailing past the swans.

This exotic city is gonna knock your socks off and leave your head spinning like a dreidel. But don’t let the prospect of navigating a foreign place make you more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. This here guide will help you uncover the magic of Marrakech so you can experience this jewel of Morocco like a pro.

Now before we get to the nitty gritty, let’s do a quick rundown of this here red hot city. Marrakech is the fourth largest city in Morocco and was once an important trading capital for merchants traveling the Saharan salt trade. Today, it’s a top tourist destination thanks to its ancient walled medina, bustling souks, stunning architecture, and lively culture. Folks here speak a mix of Arabic, French, and the Berber language Tashelhit.

The city’s nickname “Red City” comes from the natural red ochre pigment of the surrounding buildings and city walls. But when you see Marrakech yourself, you’ll realize it ain’t called that for nothin’! From the earthy red walls surrounding the old medina to the vivid red fabrics sold in the souks, this city is as red as a hound dog’s hind parts.

Now come on y’all, let’s stop beating around the bush and get to exploring this here Moroccan metropolis!

Top Attractions and Things to Do

When it comes to sights and activities, Marrakech is like a box of chocolates – you never know whatcha gonna get! But here’s a list of must-do’s to help you make the most of your visit:

Wander Around the Medina

a large clock tower towering over a city

The walled medina is the heartbeat of Marrakech, chock full of winding alleyways that reveal surprises at every turn. Its labyrinthine lanes harbor historic mosques, grand palaces, local homes, hole-in-the-wall shops, and fragrant gardens. Don’t be afraid to get lost in here—getting turned around is part of the experience!

Keep your eyes peeled when explorin’ the medina’s souks (markets) for stalls brimming with rainbow-hued spices, hand-woven rugs, shiny lampware, and every handicraft imaginable. The buzz of hawkers and wafting scents of sizzling street food add to the atmosphere. Hagglin’ is the name of the game, so put on your poker face and bargain hard for the best deals.

Marvel at Jemaa el-Fnaa

man playing flute in front cobras

If you only do one thing in Marrakech, make it a visit to Jemaa el-Fnaa. This main square transforms into a carnival-like spectacle once the sun goes down. During the day, the place is overrun by snake charmers, medicine men, henna artists, and street performers trying to make a buck.

When evening comes, Jemaa el-Fnaa turns into a giant open-air buffet with scores of food stalls serving everything from snail soup to grilled meat skewers. Storytellers, dancers, acrobats, and musicians take center stage while crowds gather for this nightly extravaganza. Don’t forget to look up—the scene is just as fascinating from the surrounding balconies.

Get Lost in the Souks

blue buildings

Marrakech’s souks are like Ali Baba’s cave – treasures abound! The largest is Souk Semmarine, where you can easily spend hours browsing its maze of jewelry, textile, and ceramics stalls. Souk Ableuh features rainbow pyramids of spices and traditional apothecary remedies, while Souk Cherratine sells leather bags, shoes, and jackets.

Make sure to check out Souk des Teinturiers, where cloth dyers work in this medieval dyer’s souk. Look down when walkin’ through here—the ground is awash in a spectrum of fabulous colors from the dyeing pits. Don’t be shy to walk into a workshop and strike up a conversation with the artisans—you’ll earn buckets of goodwill!

Pro tip: Wear comfy shoes, leave the valuables at your hotel, and have small change ready for souk transactions. Keep your eyes peeled for one-of-a-kind treasures!

Escape to the Majorelle Garden

green cactus field under blue and white sky during daytime

Need a break from the medina’s madcap pace? Make your way to the Majorelle Garden, an oasis of serenity in the city center. These lush gardens were designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle over 40 years and feature more colors than a bag of jellybeans.

Cobalt blue accents complement splendid groves of bamboo, giant palms, cacti, and 300 species of plants. Don’t miss the bright pink villa that once belonged to Yves Saint Laurent. The gardens also house the Berber Museum, which contains fascinating artifacts from the Berber people, Morocco’s largest indigenous group.

Snap Pics at Koutoubia Mosque

brown and gray bricked wall tower beside palm trees

No trip to Marrakech is complete without visiting the iconic 12th century Koutoubia Mosque and its landmark 253-foot minaret. Unfortunately, the mosque is closed to non-Muslims, but the surrounding gardens offer prime views for photos, especially at sunset when its rose-hued walls glow against the sky.

Be sure to arrive on time for the muezzin’s call to prayer – this melodic chanting will make your hair stand up like you stuck a finger in a socket. The mosques architecture influenced the Almohad dynasty’s great mosques in Seville, Tlemcen, and Rabat, so cue the Circle of Life and imagine walking in the ancestors’ footsteps.

Snoop Around Bahia Palace

a courtyard with Bahia Palace in the background

Fancy a peek into 19th century royal digs? Then saunter over to the Bahia Palace, once home to Grand Vizier Si Moussa and his four wives and 24 (yes, 24!) children. The name Bahia means “brilliance” in Arabic, and this pad certainly lives up to it, voulez-vous.

Get ready to ooh and aah over the palace’s 149 rooms glistening with intricate marquetry, painted wood ceilings, lavish courtyards, and reflective pooling fountains. Fun fact: several scenes from 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia were shot here too. Keep your peepers peeled for the notorious Blue Room – legend says it was painted this color to ward off evil spirits.

Discover the Saadian Tombs

Want to explore a slice of 16th century Marrakech? Swing by the sacred Saadian Tombs where 60 members of the Saadian dynasty have laid their bones since the 1500s. Stepping inside the ornate mausoleum with its meringue-like minarets feels like time travel – except you don’t need a crazy-haired professor or souped-up stainless steel car.

The Hall of Twelve Columns contains the crème de la crème of Saadian royalty bejeweled from head to toe. Don’t forget to duck into the adjacent mosque—its mihrab prayer niche is resplendent with colorful Zelij tiles and Arabic script. By the way, rumor has it these tombs inspired King Tut’s digs, so there ya go!

Pro tip: This attraction often gets overlooked by tourists, so take advantage of the light crowds. And ladies, cover up those knees and shoulders out of respect please!

Walk Through the Ruins of El Badi Palace

Calling all history buffs – let your imaginations run wild at the ruins of El Badi Palace. When it was built in the 16th century by the Saadian Sultan Ahmad I al-Mansur, this joint served as the ultimate party palace with lavish pavilions, pools, and gardens for entertaining royalty like a boss.

But all good things must come to an end, and El Badi changed hands many times before finally being destroyed in 1669. Today, the crumbling red walls and vast courtyard give an idea of the palace’s former grandiosity and make a terrific backdrop for some mood-setting photographs.

Bring your thinking cap and try to envision what used to be as you let your inner architect run amok wandering the ruins. Just watch your step on those dark staircases – the hazards of aging infrastructure and all.

Visit the Menara Gardens

Need a spot for a picnic lunch or Facebook photo shoot? Make a beeline to the idyllic olive groves of Menara Gardens. These lush grounds contain a magnificent restored 12th century pool flanked by lofty mountains in the distance.

On a clear day, the snowcapped Atlas Mountains seem near enough to touch! Take a peaceful stroll around the grounds, admiring the geometric flower beds, citrus trees, and outdoor amphitheater. Stop and smell the roses at the onsite nursery – the essence of Morocco fills your nose.

Insider tip: For superb people-watching and photo ops sans crowds, head to the upper floor of the pavilion. The feline residents here are an added bonus for karma points!

Helpful Tips for Planning Your Marrakech Trip

To make sure your maiden voyage to Marrakech goes smooth as jazz, keep these need-to-know tidbits in mind:

  • Taxis and private cars are fairly affordable ways to get around, but brace yourself for some … er, creative driving. For shorter trips, consider a calèche horse carriage or electric bike.
  • Dress modestly and avoid showing too much skin or PDA out of respect for local customs. To visit mosques, cover your head and limbs.
  • Leave the bling and valuables in your hotel safe when sightseeing to avoid petty theft. Keep money discreetly tucked away too.
  • Drink only bottled water and watch freshness dates on packaged foods. Your tummy will thank you.
  • Have small dirham notes for souk transactions. Bargain politely for the best deal but don’t fight over a few dollars.
  • Tipping is appreciated. Leave 10% at restaurants or round up the bill. Tip guides, drivers, hotel staff etc a few bucks.
  • Learn some basic Arabic phrases. Saying “as-salaam alaikum” (hello), “shukran” (thank you) and “ana asif” (sorry) go a long way.
  • Ramadan, when daily fasting occurs, takes place from late April to May. Note some restaurants may close and sightseeing is best before 2pm.

And that’s a wrap, y’all! Time to pack those bags and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime in Marrakech. Ya’ll come back now, ya hear?

Learn Secrets of Authentic Mexican Cooking from Talented Chefs

Food on Brown Ceramic Plate

Take your Mexican cooking game to a whole new level by taking a small group cooking class with a local chef. Warning: this experience may lead to excessive grocery shopping in the Mexican aisle back home as you get hooked on making your new signature dishes.

Not only will you gain practical skills and learn techniques, you’ll also dive deep into the cultural heart of Mexican cuisine. The hands-on instructions allow you to form a tactile connection with the ingredients and really understand how raw foods are transformed into complex Mexican flavors.

Ask all your burning questions as you chopmix and shape. How do you know when the mole is done? What’s the key to the perfect tamale dough? How do you achieve optimum taco filling distribution? The chefs will guide you through recipes step-by-step and share plenty of pro cooking tips. Don’t be shy – they love to nerd out on all things Mexican food.

Eat Your Way Through La Merced Market for an Edible Education

Make a beeline for the massive Merced Market and roam the busy aisles stuffing your face with delicious local eats. It’s a crazy huge, chaotic labyrinth full of sights, sounds, secret spots, and literal mounds of produce, chilies, spices, meat, and more. An absolute Mexican food paradise.

Let the symphony of vendor calls, customer negotiations and food sizzling lead you from one tasty snack to the next. Sample exotic fruits and veggies you’ve never seen before. Is it a dragonfruit or an alien egg? Only one way to find out! Don’t miss the mole stands where abuelitas handcraft family recipes into incredible complex sauces.

Cruise through the taco and street food area where the smell of carne asada and chorizo sizzling on griddles will lure you in. Grab a torta packed with different meats or try local antojitos like flautas and tlacoyos. And don’t even get me started on the baked goods – from buttery pastries to custards and more, just try to resist, I dare you. Wander until you’re stuffed silly, it shouldn’t take long!

Pro tip: Look for the busiest stalls with the longest lines – that lets you know the locals approve. This is the perfect place to snack now and grab ingredients for later. ¡Buen provecho!

Sip Tequila Til You’re Tipsy on an Educational Distillery Tour

Being the origin of tequila, you know Mexico City has the good stuff. Take a day trip out to a distillery for an inside look at how tequila is made from agave into alcohol. You’ll gain a whole new appreciation for the national drink.

The touristy places will let you take tiny quick sips, but if you find a smaller family-owned spot, you may get to really take your time savoring top shelf tequilas not available anywhere else. Learn how tequila differs from mezcal and get the lowdown on classifications like reposado and añejo.

Don’t just sip the free samples – take advantage of your access and order a legitimate tequila tasting flight. I’m talking at least 5-6 shots worth of exclusive aged tequilas you need to thoroughly evaluate. Really get your sip, sniff, slurp technique down. Don’t forget to coat your hand in salt, pour the tequila down your throat, and bite down on a juicy lime wedge chaser for the true experience. Pace yourself though, shots add up fast since tequila goes down so smooth. Take it slow…no need to end up wearing a sombrero and dancing with the burros. Save the fiesta for later!

Dive Headfirst Into Mexico City’s Obsession with Café Culture

Mexico City is packed with charming cafés serving world-class coffees. Find a sunny patio, order an expertly brewed cappuccino, and do some excellent people watching as the city buzzes by. Ah, la vida cafetera!

The third wave specialty coffee scene is booming here, which means you’re sipping locally roasted top quality beans, not just swill. Take your time deciding -should you go for a refreshing cold brew or luxurious slow drip? The baristas know their stuff and will gladly nerd out on process and tasting notes with fellow coffee aficionados.

And don’t think it’s just the coffee that’s incredible at these cafes. You’ve gotta try the pastries, too. The smell of freshly baked goods will stop you in your tracks -crunchy-flaky conchasgooey cinnamon rolls, picture perfect tres leches cake. And why not wash it all down with a piece of spiced chocolate pecan tarta?

Pro tip: Look for the spots with patios, good people watching, and lots of hipsters working on their Macbooks. Extra points if there is a selfie-worthy mural or some cool art out front – that’s how you know you’ve hit prime café territory.

Fill Up On Quintessential Mexico City Street Food

man in gray long sleeve shirt standing in front of food display counter

Alright, street food fiends – time to get your hands dirty! Any proper foodie adventure here requires stuffing your face from no-frills street food vendors and hole-in-the-wall taquerias. Go off the well-trodden tourist paths and eat where the locals are – the best tacos, quesadillas, and tortas overflowing with fixings await!

First things first – tacos. At bare bones spots, the best are served steaming hot right from the hands of taco masters in tiny, warm corn tortillas. We’re talking juicy al pastor, fall-apart barbacoa, zesty carnitas, chorizo and egg, succulent lengua – take your pick of classic fillings and top with tangy salsas.

Next, track down some torta stands for Mexican sandwiches loaded with different meatscheeses, crisp veggies, avocadochipotle mayo, beans and more. Warning: they are deliciously messy to eat – go in with gusto and don’t be shy about using copious napkins.

And don’t get me started on the antojitos – empanadas, sopes, gorditas, flautas, and more. The perfect handheld munchies. Just point and eat whatever looks good!

Sample the City’s Cutting-Edge Culinary Scene

Mexico City’s dining scene is blowing up! There is crazy culinary innovation happening with both traditional and modern restaurants. Foodies, get ready to get your foam, deconstructed dishes, and molecular gastronomy on as you experience the essence of New Mexican Cuisine.

This ain’t your abuelita’s tacos – we’re talking wild fusion flavor combinations and luxe ingredients you’d never imagine in tacos. How does duck confitlobsterblack truffle or wagyu beef sound? Or what about tacos topped with foie gras mousse, edible gold flakes or caviar? ¡Ay, caramba!

The quest for unique flavor profiles also leads to unexpected haute cuisine ingredients making appearances in classic dishes. How does smoked axolotl molecricket flour tortillas or mezcal-cured lamb barbacoa sound? Adventurous eaters, this trendy scene is for you!

Just come hungry and ready for an unforgettable progressive meal – your tastebuds are in for a wild innovative ride. But save room for dessert – we’re talking avocado lime cheesecake with cricket brittlechurros with exotic fruit dipping sauces, or mezcal cocktails turned into gummy candy. Mind blown.

Dive Into Traditional Markets and Authentic Dishes

I know you want to hit the flashy hot spots, but take a day to explore old school traditional markets and eateries. Embrace the hustle and bustle as you eat where locals shop and dine. We’re talking non-trendy family-owned gems cooking up specialties passed down through generations.

Haggle over prices like a pro – it’s expected that you’ll barter a bit. Compliment the abuelita’s mole sauce and ask for a discount. Score the perfect ripe avocados for a killer guac. Grab some spice blends you can’t find back home. Just be respectful – a little good humored banter goes a long way.

And you’ve got to try the regional mole sauces that Mexico is so famous for – rich, complex, and so much more than just a chocolate sauce. Savor slow-cooked meat stewed in earthy pipian rojo or poblano chiles. Treat yourself to family recipes perfected over generations. Take a walk on the authentically local side!

Final Thoughts

Well, foodies, that’s a wrap! Mexico City truly is a paradise for incredible food adventures. From street cart snacks to gourmet restaurants, everything you eat will explode with unique local flavors. Don’t wait – book that flight and let your tastebuds explore the diversity this delicious city has to offer. Just be sure to bring your stretchy pants and appetite! Buen provecho.

The Call of the Wild: Why Patagonia’s Torres del Paine Beckons the Intrepid Adventurer https://www.thoughtzeen.com/the-call-of-the-wild-why-patagonias-torres-del-paine-beckons-the-intrepid-adventurer/ https://www.thoughtzeen.com/the-call-of-the-wild-why-patagonias-torres-del-paine-beckons-the-intrepid-adventurer/#respond Sat, 04 Nov 2023 15:23:26 +0000 https://www.thoughtzeen.com/?p=337 For those itching for an epic adventure, look no further than Patagonia’s Torres del Paine. This National Park in Chilean Patagonia boasts some of the most stunning mountain scenery and trekking routes in the world. From its rugged granite spires and massive glaciers to its shimmering turquoise lakes and verdant valleys, Torres del Paine looks like something straight out of a fantasy novel. But this realm of natural wonders is very real indeed, and it’s calling all intrepid explorers ready to answer the wild’s siren song.

Gear Up for Glory: The Essential Equipment for Conquering Torres del Paine

Preparation is key for a successful Torres del Paine trek. Having the proper clothing, footwear, and camping gear can make or break your experience in this demanding environment. Don’t be tempted to cut corners on your equipment – going cheap will leave you cold, wet and miserable.

Clothing – Layers for Any Weather This Side of a Blizzard

Patagonian weather is notoriously fickle, so packing versatile layers is a must. Start with moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat off your skin. Add an insulating midlayer like a fleece jacket. Top it off with a waterproof-breathable outer shell to fend off rain, wind and snow. Bring beanies, gloves and buffs for extra warmth. Round out your wardrobe with hiking pants and shorts to handle changing temps.

Footwear – Boots Sturdy Enough to Kick a Puma in the Behind

With rough, uneven terrain and streams to ford, you’ll want burly hiking boots with stiff ankle support, durable abrasion-resistant uppers and hardcore traction. Break those puppies in before the trek to avoid painful blisters. Trail runners don’t provide enough stability for backpacking with a heavy pack over long distances. And fording frigid streams in flimsy sneakers is how you lose toes to frostbite. Play it safe and stick with hardcore boots.

Camping Gear – From Poles to Sleeping Bags, the Creature Comforts of the Trail

A quality tent and sleeping system are essential for staying warm and dry through Patagonia’s stormy nights. Seek out a sturdy 3-season tent built to withstand extreme winds. For ultimate comfort, choose an insulated sleeping pad with a high R-value and a sleeping bag with a temperature rating of 15 to 20°F. Trekking poles improve stability and take pressure off knees during long days. Round out your gear with a pack, stove, headlamp, and all the usual backpacking doodads.

Transportation – Getting to the Trailhead in Style…or at Least Getting There

Reaching Torres del Paine requires schlepping yourself to the remote southern tip of Chile. Once there, you’ll need to arrange transportation to the park entrance. Here are some options for getting your expedition kicked off on the right foot.

Shuttle Bus – Rubbing Elbows with Fellow Trekkers While Seeing the Sights

From Puerto Natales, the gateway town to Torres del Paine, shuttle buses provide hassle-free transportation directly to park HQ. You’ll share the ride with other hikers from across the globe, making friends before even hitting the trail. And you’ll get to soak up views of the Patagonian steppe en route.

Rental Car – Forging Your Own Path While Singing “Life is a Highway”

The independent explorer can opt to rent a car and self-drive to the park. While more expensive and less social than the bus, having your own wheels allows ultimate flexibility. Roll down the windows, crank up some vintage Rascal Flatts, and belt out “Life is a Highway” as you cruise through the desolate pampas.

Permits – Yes, There is Actually Bureaucracy in the Backcountry

Before strapping on your boots and hitting the trail, some red tape must be untangled. Be sure to arrange all necessary permits well in advance to secure campsite reservations and pay required fees.

Reserving Campsites – The Early Bird Gets the Tent Pad with a View

Campsites in Torres del Paine book up months ahead. Make reservations early to ensure you get spots at coveted backcountry camps like Los Cuernos, with epic views of the Buque Glacier and turquoise lake. No one wants to be stuck at a barren roadside camp because they procrastinated.

Entrance Fees – Paying to Play in Patagonia’s Backyard

All visitors to Torres del Paine must pay an entrance fee. Options include purchasing a day pass or buying a more economical multiday pass covering your entire stay. Having the right access permit is mandatory – you’ll be shown the door (or rather, trail) without one.

Trail Options – Choose Your Own Adventure from Day Hikes to Multi-Day Treks

Torres del Paine offers a wealth of hiking opportunities sure to satisfy trekkers of every ability and ambition. Whether you want a short day hike or an extended backpacking journey, the park has a trail for you.

Las Torres – Up Close and Personal With the Iconic Towers

If time is limited, hike Las Torres trail to the base of the park’s legendary namesake towers. The 12-mile roundtrip can be completed in a (very strenuous) day. You’ll earn bragging rights for glimpsing the granite spires looming overhead in all their glory.

Circuit Trek – The Full Torres del Paine Experience

For the ultimate Torres del Paine trek, embark on the multi-day Circuit around the entire park. The 60-mile loop takes you past alpine lakes, magnificent glaciers and the iconic Cuernos del Paine peaks. Expect staggering scenery at every turn, with new wonders revealed daily. Just beware exposure to that much sheer natural beauty has been known to cause spontaneous outbursts of Yodeling without warning.

With over 270,000 acres of roadless wilderness, navigation skills are key in Torres del Paine. Guides are not required, but you will need to know how to confidently routefind on your own through rugged terra incognita.

Topographical Maps – Back to Basics With Plain Old Paper

Navitate old school with waterproof topographic paper maps. Combined with a compass, thesedetailed maps get you where you need to go without relying on electronics. Just pray your map reading skills from the Boy Scouts didn’t disappear along with your dubious freckle-faced charms of youth.

GPS – Welcome to the 21st Century of Location Tracking

Modern trekkers can opt for GPS navigation using devices like Garmin inReach. GPS saves hassle and provides peace of mind, enabling you to see and share your location. Just be sure to carry spare batteries! Because while being hunched over a paper map trying to locate yourself is old-fashioned, being lost, stranded and out of battery power is just old-fashioned stupid.

Packing – The Art of Cramming Everything You Need Into a Tiny Bag

Packing for a multi-day Torres del Paine trek requires meticulous planning. You must pare your gear down to bare essentials – and then manage to somehow cram it all into your backpack like a deranged Tetris game.

The Ounce Challenge – Cutting Every Extra Ounce for a Lighter Load

Ounces make pounds, and pounds mean pain on the trail. Leave non-essentials behind and scrutinize each piece of gear to shave weight. Saw those toothbrush handles in half! Pare your first aid kit down to just the vital bits and bobs! Remember, every ounce you lose gets you closer to not needing a search and rescue team to carry you out on a stretcher.

Pack Organization – Making Your Gear Accessible So You Don’t Lose Your Mind

Pack your backpack wisely using stuff sacks, packing cubes and bags to keep gear orderly. Make sure essentials like first aid supplies, clothing layers and snacks are quickly accessible. There’s nothing worse than impotently rifling through your entire disheveled pack as sleet pelts your face and your trailmates stare daggers at your disorganized behind.

Camp Set-Up – Mastering Your Mobile Backcountry Home

The campsites along the Torres del Paine Circuit range from rugged and remote to positively plush by backcountry standards. At day’s end, make setting up camp a smooth routine.

Tent Assembly – Channel Your Inner Architect to Withstand Patagonian Winds

Erect your shelter securely with all the stakes, guidelines and tie-offs needed to survive these notorious winds. A poorly set-up tent catching a Patagonian gust can quickly turn into a human kite – and no one wants to be that person.

Sleep System – Combining Sleeping Bag and Pad for Optimal ZZZs

Unfurl your sleeping bag into its stuff sack at the bottom of your tent to insulate you from the frozen ground. Inflate your sleeping pad and position it on top of the bag for cushioning. Nestle in and sleep soundly like a hibernating marmot. You’ll need your beauty rest before another big day of walking.

Hydration and Nutrition – Fueling Your Body to Go the Distance

Keeping your body energized and hydrated is crucial when you’re crushing miles deep in the backcountry. Don’t neglect these critical pillars of performance.

Water – Methods for Supplying Your Most Important Resource

Carry sufficient water, utilizing filtration/purification systems as needed to replenish from streams and lakes. Pro tip: don’t drink from stagnant ponds or you might spend the night praying to the Porcelain God.

Food – Packing Nutritious and Delicious Trail Meals

Plan high protein, high calorie meals and snacks that provide fuel for miles without weighing you down. Include favorite treats for morale – just be ready to battle mice chewing through your pack to get them!

Staying Safe – Mitigating Risks from Weather to Wildlife

While rewarding, backpacking in Torres del Paine isn’t without hazards. But preparation and precaution go a long way towards managing risks.

Emergency Supplies – Preparing for the Worst While Hoping for the Best

Pack essentials like a first aid kit, fire starter, whistle, satellite communicator and emergency blanket. Having gear to manage an emergency could be the difference between life and death if things really hit the fan out in the middle of nowhere. But let’s not dwell on that dismal possibility! The cathartic zest for adventure far outweighs any minuscule risks!

Bear Precautions – Keeping Your Food and Self Bear-Free

Use bear canisters to store food away from your tent. Cook away from camp and hang any smelly items from a bear hang. Make noise on the trail to avoid surprising any stealthy pumas. And if one still ambushes you, remember: you only have to outrun your slowest friend!

Appreciating Torres del Paine – Immerse Yourself in the Natural Beauty

Getting wrapped up in logistics is easy when preparing for a Patagonia trek. But don’t forget the reason you’re going: to immerse yourself in breathtaking wilderness and appreciate this iconic landscape in all its grandeur.

Fauna Spotting – Watching Guanacos, Condors and Maybe Even Pumas!

Scan cliffs and skies for Andean condors wheeling overhead. Study grassy hills for guanaco herds grazing. Follow puma tracks hoping for a fleeting glimpse of their tassels peeking from behind a boulder. Spotting Patagonia’s exotic fauna adds magic to the journey.

Photography – Capturing Breathtaking Memories While Remembering to Smell the Flowers

Don’t forget to put down your camera once in awhile just to soak it all in with your own eyes – no pixels or filters required. Stand still and breath deep, watching the clouds roll across the Cuernos, sunlight dance on glacial lakes, or rainbows arc over thundering waterfalls. Etch it on your soul.

Conclusion: From Glaciers to Green Valleys, an Unforgettable Backpacking Adventure Awaits in Patagonia’s Torres del Paine

An expedition through Torres del Paine offers challenge and fulfillment amid an unparalleled wilderness showcasing nature at its most raw and powerful. Answering the call of Patagonia’s wild reaches will lead you on an unforgettable backpacking journey, culminating in those iconic Torres granite towers jutting into an endless sky. From glaciers to green valleys, it’s time to lose yourself wandering through one of the world’s great wild frontiers. Adventure awaits!

Exploring The Natural Wonders Of Costa Rica: A Paradise For Eco-Tourists https://www.thoughtzeen.com/exploring-the-natural-wonders-of-costa-rica-a-paradise-for-eco-tourists/ https://www.thoughtzeen.com/exploring-the-natural-wonders-of-costa-rica-a-paradise-for-eco-tourists/#respond Thu, 02 Nov 2023 15:49:33 +0000 https://www.thoughtzeen.com/?p=570 You’ve got the bug, haven’t you? The eco-travel itch. Well, pack those bags and slap on some sunscreen, because Costa Rica’s calling your name!

From Arenal’s smoky peaks to Manuel Antonio’s sandy retreats, get set for a journey that’s as enlightening as it is exhilarating. Trust us, you won’t just explore Costa Rica’s natural wonders— they’ll renew your spirit and leave you longing for more eco-adventures!

Ready to be an eco-tourist in paradise?

Visit the Arenal Volcano

You’ll be utterly spellbound when you visit the Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular natural wonders. Honestly, it’s hardly fair to other volcanos. They don’t have half the drama or pizzazz this old guy has.

Let’s delve into a bit of Volcano History – because who doesn’t love a good magma-filled backstory? The Arenal was just another mountain until 1968 when he decided to play diva and erupted without warning. Can you imagine the look on local farmers’ faces as ol’ reliable started spewing hot lava? Talk about a mood swing!

Now, from Indigenous Perspectives, ‘Arenal’ is an intriguing tale with a dash of cautionary wisdom. The native Malekus believed the mountains were powerful spirits and named them accordingly. ‘Arenal’ translates as ‘Mountain of Fire,’ clearly not one for subtleties, our indigenous friends!

Anyway, after its 1968 tantrum (which lasted two whole days! Talk about holding a grudge), Arenal became one of the world’s most active volcanoes until 2010 when it went into what scientists call an ‘indeterminate hiatus.’ Or as we laypeople like to say: It took early retirement.

So now that we’ve all become Wikipedia-level experts on Volcano History and been privy to some Indigenous perspectives, grab your hiking boots and camera because you’re off to meet Mr. Arenal himself in person! Just remember not to mention his age – it’s considered rude among volcanoes.

And hey, bonus tip: while visiting bring marshmallows – nothing roasts them perfectly like volcanic heat (wink wink).

Explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Hey there, eco-tourist!

You’ve braved the Arenal Volcano, now let’s shimmy on over to the Monteverde Reserve.

You’ll think you’ve accidentally stumbled into a screensaver – it’s that breathtaking!

We’ll dive into all its cloud-drenched beauty.

And don’t forget your conservation hat because we’re also going to explore how this verdant paradise is being preserved for future generations of awestruck visitors like yourself.

What to See in the Monteverde Reserve

In the Monteverde Reserve, you’re bound to be amazed by its diverse flora and fauna. All the greenery will have you thinking that even Kermit the Frog was off with his ‘It’s not easy being green’ shtick.

Hummingbird Gardens – It’s kind of like being at a cocktail party where all attendees are jewel-colored, wing-flapping cuties. Imagine:

  • Seeing dozens of these feisty fellas zip around, engaging in constant mid-air squabbles over nectar rights
  • Getting an iridescent photobomb if you dare try a selfie

Monteverde’s Eco Zones – Like a buffet for nature enthusiasts! Picture:

  • Mossy forests shrouded in mysterious mist, hosting howler monkeys with operatic ambitions
  • Rainforests offering spa experiences to frogs with their very own warm springs

With all this on offer, who needs Netflix?

Conservation in Monteverde

Despite all the fun, it’s important to remember that Monteverde’s beauty relies heavily on conservation efforts.

And, my eco-loving amigo, these efforts aren’t just about not stepping on the pretty flowers. These folks are hard at work ensuring sustainable agriculture practices that’ll make even your yoga mat feel envious!

Ever heard of those famous Monteverde coffee tours? Yep, they aren’t only about getting caffeinated; they’re also serious showcases of sustainable farming. By doing so, not only do they keep our beloved cuppa joe flowing but also help Mother Nature keep her cool.

So remember: next time you zip-line through this cloud forest paradise or sip that Costa Rican brew, give a little thanks for the unsung heroes of conservation behind the scene — after all, every bean matters!

Discover the Corcovado National Park

You’ll be amazed by the biodiversity found within Corcovado National Park, a must-visit spot for any eco-tourist.

Picture this: You – yes, you! – standing amidst four distinct ecosystems ranging from swamps to cloud forests. Talk about variety! Sure, it might feel like a trippy adventure in one of those video games where the scenery keeps changing unexpectedly!

Corcovado’s biodiversity is like stepping right into ‘Planet Earth’ but without David Attenborough narrating your every move (unless you want him to – then we suggest downloading his voice onto your phone and getting creative). Just think-about-it-all… tapirs doing their thing, toucans making a racket overhead while anteaters go about their business below. Not to forget the Scarlett Macaw squawking its guts out as if auditioning for American Idol bird edition.

Now you might wonder – how did all these creatures co-exist? Well, that’s where the indigenous tribes come in – they were terrific landlords long before Airbnb made it cool! They knew how every creature had its role and respected that sacred natural order of things (something our modern society could perhaps use a lesson in).

So pack up your binoculars and hiking boots folks because we’re off on an eco-adventure of a lifetime. And remember – what happens in Corcovado, stays with Corcovado’s monkeys… unless they decide to throw something at you just for fun!

In short: If experiencing pure hilarity through wild encounters for some serious bragging rights back home sounds like your cup of tea, then Corcovado National Park is waiting just for you. Be prepared though; this isn’t called ‘the most biologically intense place on Earth’ for nothing!

Experience the Tortuguero National Park

Alright, hold onto your hats folks because we’re diving straight from the jaw-dropping vistas of Corcovado National Park to another one of Costa Rica’s eco-tourism gems: Tortuguero National Park. You’re gonna love this!

What is ‘Tortuguero’ you ask? Well, picture this – it’s nighttime and there’s a full moon over crystal clear water. Suddenly, there’s a rustle in the sand dune behind you and shadows start moving toward the ocean. Folks, these aren’t just any shadows – they’re green sea turtles involved in what can only be described as an Oceanic version of ‘Dancing With The Stars’, otherwise known as Tortuguero turtle nesting!

Let me throw some numbers at ya:

Total Turtles Nesting Each Year Approximate Population
20,000+ Too many to count!

For those eco-warriors among us (responsible high five!), here are some handy-dandy eco-friendly travel tips to bear in mind when visiting:

1) Leave no trace: Like a good mystery novel, let’s keep our footprints intriguingly undetectable.

2) Water bottles are so last season: Let’s agree that plastic isn’t fantastic.

3) Support local businesses: Who can resist authentic souvenirs?

4) Be energy conscious: Flick off lights like it’s your day job.

So grab those binoculars and get ready for some Fun with a capital F! Trust me; after witnessing the majesty of Tortuguero turtle nesting firsthand, even Sir David Attenborough would be jealous. And remember folks – keep it green or leave it clean! Now who’s up for spotting jaguars tomorrow?

Now, let me dish some insights for your next mud-bath-slash-aquatic-adventure:

Feature Pro Tip Laughs
Mud Baths Great for your skin, but avoid the eyes…or risk looking like a raccoon. Tried to practice my catwalk in the mud pool. I slipped, smeared myself with volcanic goodness—it was fabulous!
Hot Springs Rinse off that sticky mud with thermal waters warmed by Mama Earth herself. Accidentally parboiled myself—you could serve me up with carrots!
Indigenous Heritage Consider this experience as dipping yourself into millennia of indigenous wisdom. Imagine telling your friends you went back in time and became one with ancient civilizations—just don’t mention it was while wallowing in mud!

Remember to pack a sense of humor along with your bathing suit!

Visit the Cahuita National Park

It’s absolutely essential that you add Cahuita National Park to your itinerary when visiting Costa Rica. Why, you ask? Well mate, this isn’t just some ordinary green leafy spot on the map, it’s a tropical party for wildlife! And by the way, you’re invited.

Cahuita Snorkeling Opportunities are like gateways to an alternate universe of psychedelic fish and reality-defying coral sculptures. Wear your snorkel mask and dive into this liquid lucid dream. Hey, don’t be surprised if a neon parrotfish asks for your autograph; they think every human is a Hollywood star!

Afro Caribbean Influence in Cahuita is as rich and layered as their ‘rice-n-beans’. The locals’ vibrant culture will inject rhythm into your veins faster than a double shot of espresso. Trust me; your hips won’t lie in Cahuita!

The hikes here are the catwalks for Mother Nature’s fashion show with sloths lazily sporting their trendy algae-fur coats or frisky monkeys swinging overhead like trapeze artists aiming straight at America’s Got Talent!

Now listen up! Don’t be deceived by those cute white-faced capuchin monkeys. They have earned PhDs in cunningness from Monkey University (that’s not really true but let’s roll with it!). So keep an eye on them or else before you know it they might return back home wearing that expensive sunglasses of yours.

What could beat thousands of acres of rainforest bursting out in laughter through squawking toucans and chatty howler monkeys? Only a slightly deranged kangaroo maybe but guess what? You ain’t finding any here! So let’s get packing shall we?
